Highlights for 2018
- the year of culture in Constance
Constance, the largest town on Lake Constance and vibrant centre of the region, provides a unique combination of the traditional and the modern, of culture and shopping, and of quality of life and quality of work. This year, it celebrates a very special anniversary…
Highlights of the year of culture in 2018 include the final celebrations of the 600th anniversary of the Council of Constance – the only time a pope was elected north of the Alps – numerous concerts and festivals, memorable exhibitions in the museums and many other events... Cultural highlights include the famous Fasnacht carnival, the Christmas market, the cross-border flea market, the La Juive opera, the open-air theatre on Münsterplatz square and plenty more.
Tip: our new culture brochure was published in January 2018. It is packed with 50 pages of culture – including theatres, museums, music, leisure activities, education and food and drink. A journey through time that brings history to life
The picturesque alleys of the old quarter, home to more than 400 shops and malls, are ideal for leisurely shopping, and the harbour with its mediterranean vibe and breathtaking views of the lake and the Alps is a great place for a stroll. Visitors looking to indulge in some regional food and drink are well-catered for in the bars and restaurants. A wide range of city tours for all the family promise a fascinating exploration of the town’s history, with the Council of Constance, which took place 600 years ago, the standout event. The Council of Constance building, the Imperia statue at the harbour, the Hus stone and other places of interest all have associations with this momentous medieval event. Venues such as the Rosgarten Museum, the State Archaeological Museum and the Hus House bring history closer to you – join us on a voyage of discovery...
There is a wide range of things to see and do here, including Mainau Island with its great mix of nature and culture, the Sea Life centre, the thermal baths and pleasure cruises on Lake Constance. Exciting leisure activities on the water, such as sailing, windsurfing, swimming, diving and canoeing, are just as popular as relaxing on the beaches around Constance, venturing on a hike along the SeeGang trail, or island hopping by bicycle, canoe or pleasure boat. A colourful mix of high-calibre events is also on offer throughout the year, including theatre productions, performances by the philharmonic orchestra and a range of events at the Bodenseeforum conference venue.
Spring, summer, autumn or winter – Constance is well worth a visit at any time of year...
